What are nerve pain injections?
Nerve pain injections, or nerve blocks, administer targeted medication to nerves that are causing severe or chronic pain. Nerves provide signals to the brain to notify that damage or injury has occurred in an area. Sometimes, however, the nerve gets inflamed for a prolonged period or sends false signals, which can have negative impacts on a patient’s quality of life.
Nerve injections provide relief from this pain by preventing nerves from sending their signals to the brain. The administered anesthesia, and sometimes steroids, numb the nerve and help reduce inflammation. This can give the body time to heal without experiencing extreme pain.
It’s important to note that nerve pain injections are not a permanent solution, but can provide immediate and long-lasting relief for a variety of nerve problems. Follow-up injections may be necessary to provide total relief or to prolong the effects.
How are nerve pain injections administered?

While each specific treatment will have its own procedure, joint injections typically involve the following:
1. Preparation
The patient lies down on their stomach (or on their side) while getting ready for the procedure. A medication to relax your nerve is given while the skin and tissue of the back are desensitized using a local anesthetic.
2. Contrast Dye Injected
The physician utilizes a fluoroscope (a small X-ray device) and a contrast solution to validate the exact location of the needle. Once the tip of the needle is in the correct position, the medication will then be administered.
3. Medication Injected
Following the careful validation of the needle’s exact position, the doctor positions a steroid-anesthetic medication. This prescription bathes the inflamed nerve roots which will help ease the pain being experienced by the patient.
4. End of Procedure
After the procedure, the needle is withdrawn and the entry point in the skin is cleaned and bandaged. Patients typically experience a notable amount of physical relief after one injection. However, this may not be the case for other patients. Others may require multiple injections before they experience significant relief from the medication.
5. Recovery
Afterward, a caring staff member will check your side effects in the recovery room. If you’re stable and the procedure was a success, we’ll send you home to enjoy pain relief. Injections and recovery are seamless without much hassle.
