Inguinal Pain

Inguinal Pain

Inguinal pain refers to the pain and other symptoms such as discomfort in the groin.

What is inguinal pain?

The groin is the area between the stomach and the thigh, located where the lower abdomen end and the legs begin. This may affect any of the following muscles in the area: adductor brevis, adductor longus, adductor magnus, gracilis and pectineus. The pain and discomfort in the area is typically caused by physical activity or injury.

What are the symptoms of inguinal pain?

The common symptoms of inguinal pain are pain, discomfort, and inflammation in the groin. Depending on the causes, there may also be other associated symptoms.

What causes inguinal pain?

There are various possible causes of inguinal pain. While generally, the cause may not be serious, in other cases, it is. This is why it is important to take note of the associated symptoms and to seek medical attention if possible.

The most common cause of inguinal pain is strained ligaments, tendons, or muscles in the groin area. This is a type of injury that is common among athletes, particularly in contact sports like hockey, rugby, soccer, and football. Other injuries such as bone fractures in the groin area brought by sports or physical activities are also possible causes.

Another common cause is inguinal hernia. This is a condition where the internal tissues push through the groin muscles, creating a bulging lump in the area, hence, the pain. Kidney stones may also cause inguinal pain. The stones are hard mineral deposits that develop either in the bladder or the kidney.

There are less common medical conditions and disorders that could cause inguinal pain and discomfort. They include intestinal inflammation, testicular cancer, testicular inflammation, enlarged lymph nodes, ovarian cysts, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and pinched nerves.

How is inguinal pain treated?

Like in other conditions, the treatment for inguinal pain depends upon the underlying cause. Minor strains in the groin area may be treated at home, coupled with a healthy lifestyle and rest. However, severe groin pain or those that are caused by a serious condition require medical attention.

Home care is the common treatment option for inguinal pain caused by a minor strain. The best way to do to alleviate the discomfort and pain is to refrain from doing strenuous activity for a few days or weeks. Resting will allow the strain to naturally heal. Pain medications may also help manage the discomfort and pain. If there is swelling, you may also apply ice.

If there is a fracture or broken bone, you may need surgery. If the underlying cause of the pain is inguinal hernia, you may also be required to undergo surgery for treatment, Prescription medications for pain and inflammation may also be required by your doctor. Other treatment options include physical therapy and treatments designed for a specific condition
